Sibling Rivalry

41 From that time on, Esau hated Jacob because their father had given Jacob the blessing. And Esau began to scheme: “I will soon be mourning my father’s death. Then I will kill my brother, Jacob.”
42 But Rebekah heard about Esau’s plans. So she sent for Jacob and told him, “Listen, Esau is consoling himself by plotting to kill you. 43 So listen carefully, my son. Get ready and flee to my brother, Laban, in Haran.44 Stay there with him until your brother cools off.
- Genesis 27

How is it that there's always sibling rivalry? What did Esau have that Jacob wanted for himself? It was something that was hard to have because he was not the first born. Esau had birthrights as a firstborn and this is what Jacob wanted for himself too. He understood the importance of a birthright but Esau didn't. In fact, Esau took his brithright for granted that he traded his birthright over a meal because he was hungry.

It was not right that Jacob stole Esau's birthright by deceiving his father and brother. But GOD gave him the birthright because Jacob valued it and more than his brother Esau who had it. There will always be sibling rivalry's between brothers, sisters or siblings. But when we value our position in life, the importance of our roles in our families, we do not have to succumb to envy and anger on our brother or sister, but we will learn to give and take, give way to each other and most importantly love and respect one another we can minimize sibling rivalries.
