30 “But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as it is this day.
31 “And the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to possess it, that you may inherit his land.’ 32 Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz. 33 And the Lord our God delivered him over to us; so we defeated him, his sons, and all his people.
- Deuteronomy 2
Sometimes in life we hope for certain things to happen... like the Isralites who needed to pass through Heshbon and hoped that their King would allow them to. But turns out their prayers and hopes were not met, instead they would be disappointed to find out that what they hoped to happen was actually total the opposite. When what we hope for does not actually happen, it is best to look to GOD for answers, for even in the midst of disappointments and quenched hopes, GOD has a better way.
In verse 31, GOD's reveals why HE didn't allow Israel to pass by Heshbon and the reason was so that the king would oppose them and therefore give them a reason to fight against them. For GOD had wanted them to posses the land of Heshbon. Sometimes, we would not be able to do what we need to do without a catalyst. The opposition was the catalyst that Israel needed for them to react to the opposition of the King as to fight. There would not be a reason to fight if there was no stirring up or an opposition of their simple request . GOD was so faithful to provide for everything Israel ever needed to fight even if it was a bad thing as anger, anger to the King for not allowing them do a simple thing as to pass by their land. But with GOD's blessing, their anger led them to fight with all their might and with GOD's mighty hand with them, delivered the people of Heshbon unto the Israelites so that they were able to defeat the people of Heshbon. So if you are disappointed to learn that your prayers are not answered exactly the way you wanted it, look to Yahweh and ask, HE might have an even better plan.
