Superficial

1 In my distress I cried to the Lord,
And He heard me.
2 Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips
And from a deceitful tongue...
6 My soul has dwelt too long
With one who hates peace.
7 I am for peace;
But when I speak, they are for war.
- Psalm 120: 1,2,6,7 (NKJV)

Don't you just hate it when people tell you something nice and good but they don't really mean what they are saying? You can't really know if they do mean what they say or not... but somehow sincerity can be felt by the heart. We can't really avoid lies being told to us because we can't force people to be truthful as we want them to be. We can only speculate if they are being truthful or lying. But somehow other people may not be the only ones lying in their hearts for we ourselves do not know that we lie to ourselves too. We pretend to be happy when we are not, pretend to know it all when we don't, pretend to be something just to cover up our real feelings, afraid of showing our vulnerability.

It's just right to be guarded in trusting people and in fact, the Bible says to guard your hearts for it is the wellspring of live. It is just wise to guard who you pour your heart into because you don't know who are loyal to you and those who are truly your enemy and wants to bring you down. King David has had those experiences where he just wants to have peace with people but some people are secretly against him pretending to be his friends. I heard a preacher  refer to these kinds of superficial people as "frenemies". It means pretend friend & true enemy. You wouldn't want to have any of those in your life. In fact this is why David hates superficial people so much, he hates being lied to. And no matter how much peace David wants with these people, no matter what he tries to say, some people are just naturally sold out against him and there's nothing he could do. He could only cry out to GOD to be free from being lied to and live in peace even though some hateful others just want to wage war against him. Only GOD could deliver us from our enemies.
